Catawba: What the Earth Remembers
What The Earth Remembers 66" x 90" In the Collection of The Hickory Museum of Art. Commissioned to commemorate renovations completed in 2016
It was like yesterday, Earth recalled.
when the Catawba Nation with great respect, proposed the partnership.
Your tangerine colored clay, they suggested
The hands of our women.
We'll coil your clay into vigorous forms
We'll fire in pits built in your lands.
We'll burnish the pots with smooth stones from your river
Burnish to a red velvet touch worthy of a King's cape.
Earth shared in the satisfaction that the pots sustained a people
and in giddier moments imagined
vessels whose beauty would one day be celebrated far beyond their function
Earth glories in those memories.
She'll tell you there's
a red brick shrine to imagination, invention
and the community that continues to flourish under her care.
Yes, Earth remembers.
